This Ralph Lauren advertisement gives me the urge to start a habit of scotch and cigars! I love this look. I definitely lean towards a traditional European style in my own home decor. I suppose, growing up being surrounded by my parents’ treasures from their travels to Europe influenced my love for it. Their collection of German steins, prints of ornate castles, carved wood cherubs and fleur-de-lis from Italy had an impact on my likes and dislikes of my current surroundings. My childhood home is full blown European. When my parents built their home in the early 1960’s, they built a bar in their basement. My dad, actually, built it using used brick and a beautiful antique mirrored top off a fireplace mantel they bought for $35. I spent many hours playing the barmaid, taking orders on my carbon copy receipt pad and serving up a mean “pretend” grasshopper to my customers. It’s funny that my parents were not big drinkers by any stretch of the imagination, yet had a bar in their home! And although my early exposure to the bar scene gave me some great barmaiding skills, I would still prefer a decadent sugar laden treat over a glass of fermented grain.
The bar’s function has changed, through the years, from bar service to housing my mom’s Christmas Village.
Thank goodness my parents had some ethics about them and hung this sign in their bar! HA!
Happy decorating! Caprice~Cailin Design
